Cover Friday: I’ll take a little Will Oldham on my hero, thanks

Before Mimi got herself emancipated, Mariah Carey had it kind of rough, as far as the hard knocks life of pop divahood goes. There was the emotionally abusive marriage, the public breakdown cited as “exhaustion,” the dating Derek Jeter who is classified as a walking herpes scar. Unlike semi-doppelgänger Whitney Houston, we kept giving Carey second chances. But it worked. Somehow, Mimi brushed off the embarrassing flecks of Glitter, married a man ten years her junior, and stands second to the Beatles as having the most number-one hits on the Billboard charts.

It’s easy to dismiss Mariah Carey’s music as sugar-coated drivel. The majority of her music is sugar-coated drivel. But it’s delivered in such an undeniably powerful voice, one so darned sure of itself at very note, that Carey could sing a dirge about Princess Unicorn and her quest for peace and ice cream and you’d still have to acknowledge the technical chops of the song.

You would think the career trajectory of Will Oldham might go a lot differently. Surprisingly, he and Carey have a few things in common. They were each born in 1970. Both have dabbled in film. Each artist is very respected in their respective genres. They’ve both even undergone name shifts, though Mariah to the Mimi nickname makes slightly more sense than Palace Music to Bonnie “Prince” Billy. For all Oldham lacks in mega-budget production and rainbow-grown glamour, the kids really love him. Plus, Will Oldham’s probably never slept with Derek Jeter. Advantage, Kentucky.

Mariah Carey’s album, Ballads, was released on January 20.

Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s upcoming album, Beware!, is scheduled for released on Drag City on Tuesday, March 17.
